The 2010 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is well underway and Halibut are getting weighed in. Remember anglers, Homer has a two fish per day per person halibut catch limit!!!
We have a new derby
leader - Jamie Olvera of Fairbanks, AK whose 277.6 lb barn door halibut
knocked out Mark Hilts' 273.2 lb fish. Not bad for a day of fishing! As we are nearing the end of our Derby season, with just a month left, can Jamie hold on to the lead or will we have a 300 lb halibut come in with the angler holding a Derby ticket? Time will tell and fishing sensations to all you anglers - the Derby isn't over until September 30th, so don't forget to buy your Derby ticket and don't miss your opportunity of a life time like a few of the anglers did this year. August brought in some great fish. On August 1st a barn door halibut weighing 313 lbs was reeled in, but the angler did not have a derby ticket. And again in the next to last week in August another 300+ pounder was hooked, but this angler also did not have a derby ticket. Bet both these individuals are kicking themselves for not spending that extra $10.00 for a chance to win big!!! August Standings are now final!
In second place with his 257.4 lb halibut is Steve White of Kettle Falls, WA. Steve was fishing with Alaska Coastal Marine aboard the "Nautilus" with Captain Chris Andrews.
July standings are now final.
Cheryl Goeke of Mesquite, NV relinquished her fourth place standing to claim the July Lady Angler prize. Cheryl caught her 250.6 lb halibut on July 1st while fishing with Big Bear Halibut Charters aboard the "Bear Force II" with Captain Jim Craddock. Congratulations Cheryl.
Our second tagged fish of the season was caught by Connie Lageson of Starbuck, MN while fishing with Frostlipripper Charters aboard the "Sea Raider" with Capt. Robert Frost. The tagged fish, worth $500, was sponsored by Homer Glass & Screen. Our third tagged fish of the season was caught by Oscar Hall IV of Eagle River, AK while fishing on a private boat. The tagged fish, worth $500, was sponsored by Captain B's Alaskan C's Adventures.
Our fifth tagged fish of the season was caught by Lavern Davidhizar of Soldtona, AK while fishing with Bob's Trophy Charters. The tagged fish, worth $500 was sponsored by All Seasons Honda
