Halibut Fishing in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby

Tom Youngblood and his 354.6 lb
2009 Jackpot Winner

2009 Jackpot  $40,440

The 2010 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is well underway and Halibut are getting weighed in. Remember anglers, Homer has a two fish per day per person halibut catch limit!!!

We have a new derby leader - Jamie Olvera of Fairbanks, AK whose 277.6 lb barn door halibut knocked out Mark Hilts' 273.2 lb fish.

Jamie was fishing with North Country Halibut Charters with Captain Ben Martin aboard the "Fringe Benefit" on August 28th when she caught her big fish. Jamie is our current Jackpot leader as well as our first place leader for the month of August and our Lady Angler for August. She has only a couple of days to wait until the end of August to see if she continues to hold the top spot, but from her smile, she has had an adventure of a life time!!

Not bad for a day of fishing! As we are nearing the end of our Derby season, with just a month left, can Jamie hold on to the lead or will we have a 300 lb halibut come in with the angler holding a Derby ticket?

Time will tell and fishing sensations to all you anglers - the Derby isn't over until September 30th, so don't forget to buy your Derby ticket and don't miss your opportunity of a life time like a few of the anglers did this year.

August brought in some great fish. On August 1st a barn door halibut weighing 313 lbs was reeled in, but the angler did not have a derby ticket. And again in the next to last week in August another 300+ pounder was hooked, but this angler also did not have a derby ticket. Bet both these individuals are kicking themselves for not spending that extra $10.00 for a chance to win big!!!

August Standings are now final!

Jamie Olvera elected to take first place and relinquished the Lady Angler prize to Stacy Headrick of Dallas, OR who caught her 172.6 lb fish while fishing with North Country Charters aboard the "Fringe Benefit" with Captain Ben Martin.

In second place with his 257.4 lb halibut is Steve White of Kettle Falls, WA. Steve was fishing with Alaska Coastal Marine aboard the "Nautilus" with Captain Chris Andrews.

July standings are now final.

Mark Hilts of Grand Rapids, MN holds down first place with his 273.2 barn door halibut. He caught his big fish on July 13th while fishing with Magic Waters Charters with Captain Peter Karwowski aboard the Sorceress.

Cheryl Goeke of Mesquite, NV relinquished her fourth place standing to claim the July Lady Angler prize. Cheryl caught her 250.6 lb halibut on July 1st while fishing with Big Bear Halibut Charters aboard the "Bear Force II" with Captain Jim Craddock.   Congratulations Cheryl.
