Halibut Fishing in the
Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby

Tickets

You won't be smiling at the end of the day if you catch a tagged fish or a monthly winner and didn't buy a derby ticket

Angler Barb Glidden smiles with a halibut caught in May of 2001. The Derby  runs May1 thru Sept. 30, so don't forget to buy your ticket

The official derby ticket of the Jackpot Halibut Derby not only buys you the chance at winning one of the many prizes, it also gives you valuable coupons to redeem while visiting Homer. Each year the coupon offers great deals to anglers, like discounted taxi fares, special rates on water transportation or outdoor gear, reduced price meals at local restaurants, or free souvenirs at local shops.

The derby ticket must be purchased in advance of fishing, and there are many ways to do this. Local charter offices, B&Bs and stores sell the tickets (see list below), some captains have voice mail programs and can sell from their boat in the mornings (check with your captain) and the Official Derby Headquarters opens at the Homer Harbor at 5:30 am for ticket purchases (from May 23-August 15). Call for specific hours in May and September.

The ticket costs $10 and enters you for one day of fishing. $2.50 of every ticket sold goes to the jackpot, and the remainder of the price covers some of the many other prizes and makes up the operating budget of the Derby. Each year the Derby sells between 13,000 and 17,000 tickets. The Derby is the largest fund raiser for the Homer Chamber of Commerce which operates the Visitor Information Center for Homer and serves as the traditional Chamber and Visitor Bureau.

Multi-Day Tickets are also available. You can purchase a 10-day ticket for $75.00. The Multi-Day Tickets are only sold at the Homer Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center or at Halibut Derby Headquarters on the Spit.
